A half tank up the mountains, Big Bear winters are isolating for heiress Bayliss Jones. Circled by the same cult that murdered her parents fifteen years before, death awaits her around every corner. Her shirttail relative and trustee of her estate, Sheriff Byron McGill, never agreed with local hearsay that made her a suspect. Air crackles between two people who clash, but the spoiled princess needs his help. Besides hers, the life of a young man, her secret baby, hangs in the balance. There’s no time for error.

This 5-Star review for DEEDS OF DECEIT comes from Brittany Walters-Beardon of Chateau D’If Press.

Deeds of Deceit is Kathleen Rowland’s first romantic suspense book in her Welcome to the Lake series. This page-turning novella takes place in Big Bear, California, offering readers both nail-biting suspense and tender romance that will keep them riveted as the relentless plot unfolds.

Bayliss Jones had been accused of murdering her parents when she was a teenager 15 years earlier. The winters on Jones Mountain take a toll on Bayliss, especially when the ghost of her mother appears to her. At some point, she realizes that her ex-boyfriend is involved; as she starts to put the pieces of the puzzle together, her situation becomes extremely dangerous.

The trustee of her estate, Sheriff Byron McGill never believed the local gossip about Bayliss being involved in the murders. There are many twists and turns as both Bayliss and Byron fight to survive danger lurking around every corner. As the story unfolds, there are intriguing side plots about a baby who was given up at birth, a cult that is possibly kidnapping children, and much more. The quest to find the truth places them both in perilous situations.

Something begins to develop between Byron and Bayliss that neither can deny, with their attraction growing stronger as they work together to solve the mystery surrounding Bayliss and the family murder. They travel to the home of Byron’s parents, Mary Rose and Dunigan McGill where they devise a plan to find out who murdered Suzanne and Woody Jones. The heart-racing plot culminates in a frantic pace, binding the love that Byron and Bayliss have for each other.

Kathleen Rowland skillfully interweaves mystery with a romantic love story in this contemporary gothic novel, creating a multi-faceted story that can be enjoyed by readers of many different genres. Readers are inevitably left anxious for the next release in the gripping Welcome to the Lake series.

Another 5-Star review for Deeds of Deceit from  Mihir Shah, Amazon reviewer.

In Deeds of Deceit, the first book of Kathleen Rowland's the "Welcome to the Lake" series, Bayliss Jones is haunted by the memories of her murdered parents. Despite being cleared of any wrongdoing, much of the Big Bear Lake community shuns her. Interestingly, her life of unease is accentuated by Todd, her ex-fiancée, and his love interest, Hilary Fleisher; they will go to any length to terrify Bayliss so she will acquiesce and turn Jones Mountain into a ski resort. Complicating matters, Byron McGill, a police detective, is entrusted by Jones' grandfather with her entire property--all of Jones Mountain in Big Bear California.
Whether it is the Beretta-carrying Hilary Fleisher, Todd Sheffield, or an earthquake, danger lurks along every corner for Bayliss. In the process, however, she finds herself in a flaming romance with Byron McGill. Essentially, the author does a commendable job of interweaving numerous plotlines, merging them into one united purpose. The frenetic pace, nonstop energy, and powerful imagery bring each page to life and allow the audience to envision the multiple confrontations between Bayliss, Byron, Todd, and Hilary. In particular, the intimate scene inside Jones' home, after Byron and Bayliss barely escape the gun-slinging potheads and the potentially fatal Big Bear cold, captures the spirit of love, passion, and life.

Deeds of Deceit is undoubtedly sensuous and full of mystery. At the same time, however, the author's inspiration for the book arises from her own experiences with cult studies. In her book, the Hilary Fleisher-led Get Megawatts practices cult like behaviors and activities. Oblivious to Bayliss, her fifteen-year-old son, whom she put up for adoption at birth, has become a member of this cult. Can Bayliss and Byron together defeat Todd and Hilary, save Avery from the cult, and ultimately leave the cold and solitude of Big Bear Lake winters?

Deeds of Deceit is a thrilling, must-read page-turner set in the frosty confines of Big Bear Lake.

If you are an aspiring writer or just want to brush up, I'm teaching another online class on point of view.  I enjoyed teaching a class in September for From the Heart Romance Writers and will do another in March 2012.  Using my video-camera-on-the-head technique, writers will begin to look through their characters' eyes, use their voices, and feel their moods. It only takes a month to learn the nuts and bolts of POV. When you get it right, you will stick to one POV per scene or chapter.

In my month-long classes I present weekly insightful lessons on POV. After discussions, you will submit three-page sections per week and receive feedback. I'll help you know what's right with your sample and how to improve your character's POV.

Balancing her yoga spa and raising twins, Widow Heatherlee Baronova is slammed with a visit from the partner (other woman of her late husband). She, an ex-con, demands a key to a safe deposit box. Heatherlee knows nothing about it. When her spa Clearwater is robbed, the police investigation is headed up by Sheriff Marc Duarte, a Basque sheep rancher from the silkiest gentry of town. The last thing she wants is for Marc to prove that dirty money built Clearwater. He knows her problems with a Russian theft ring will escalate beyond bad press and the bottom line. What he does not know is that she married her husband because he looked like him.

(Four characters from my book, MINING EVERMORE, are secondary characters in A KEY TO ALL THAT GLITTERS. They are Heatherlee's attorney friend, Tara Delacuz, Senator Cord Smith, Teacher Mae Han, and Detective Leviticus Blake.)

GOLD STANDARD OF THIN, an inspirational healthy eating guide by Janice Rowland and Kathleen Rowland, contains Seven Secrets, tucked into a "little gold suitcase", guaranteed to help you fake a skinny gene. You have two kinds of beauty.  There's the kind you wear on the outside.  You're so much prettier than you think.  There's the kind on the inside, your unique blend of strengths, passions, kindness, and talents that make you who you are.  Abounding health is something else, and as you become thin on the Gold Standard Plan, you will have that, too.  Can a woman be too rich or too thin?

GOLD STANDARD OF THIN is written by two women, mother and daughter, from two different perspectives.  Daughter Janice is an energetic campus walker and yoga enthusiast at CSU Chico who is creative with food purchases.  Her mother, Kathleen, a kitchen-puttering traditionalist, has a slower metabolism but swims laps nearly every day.  Contrasting ideas are streamlined into universal truths while they whittled their bodies like science experiments.  Both believe it's important to keep the mind focused on the positives of life; maintaining a healthy, lean body has more to do with lifestyle and attitude than genetics.

Windward Whisperings, has received a five heart review from trusted reviewer, Linda, at The Romance Studio. Linda says this: WINDWARD WHISPERINGS is a charming read. Rowland's touching writing makes the reader feel good all over. Thank you, Linda. WINDWARD WHISPERINGS is a steamy interracial reunion story combined with suspense, making the story twice the ride.

Another five star rating comes from Long Island Book Drifters. Reviewer John Philip Meyer writes this: I just finished this book, the second one I've read by Kathleen Rowland, and can't wait to read more. I'm a character person. When a writer creates a reality in the dialogue between and in the descriptions of the characters and the place...I keep reading. I have found Landings Beach and it's inhabitants to be full of the qualities you would expect from a coastal California town. A place of relaxed sophistication and beautiful edginess, not too far removed from the rest of California's grit and psychosis. The people have a past, but are alive in the present, driven by their qualties to thrust forward through obstacles and find their very own destinies. The characters are very real to me, like people I know... well, maybe just a wee bit better.

Mining Evermore, ISBN: 978-1-934475-03-4, a steamy interracial paranormal thriller, is the Amira Press AROUND THE WORLD CONTEST winner. Available from Amira Press and Amazon in print format and ebook from Amira Press, fictionwise, and mobipocket.

The following review received FIVE HEARTS from Linda at The Romance Studio: Tara Delacruz is a criminal lawyer who gets the heat when she lets the corrupt guys off. Living in a small town, where ill-bred townsfolk live, does not always make her day one of bliss. Mayor Cordell Smith is not pleased that the criminals continue to be released with Tara’s work. As his re-election rally soon starts, his thoughts are with the psycho still at large and his platform issues just don’t matter at the moment. He wants the bizarre happenings in town to stop.

When he has the opportunity to meet Tara, she is one Black beauty that captures his heart. With the events happening in the town, the people are more outraged against Tara for allowing certain criminals to go free. As other victims are soon found, with their body’s neck level along the beach, in the sand, it appears they don’t really drown when the tides rise. Fear consumes the town but Cord understands all about immortality and knows all too well the psycho is using it as an evil use. When the town tries to get back at Tara for her actions, Cord jumps in to her rescue.

With his immortality, he fears by continuing to see her will only make it harder to leave her when he is promised eternity forever.

I can tell the author really put everything into writing MINING EVERMORE. The story is so remarkably crafted that it is hard to put this page-turner down. Kathleen Rowland sketches characters that are perfectly groomed in every way. Tara and Cord have passion that shines whenever they are together. They are so refreshing; they jump out and grab a hold of the reader. Amidst the mystery and suspense, I felt like I was part of the investigation with every twist and turn that kept me guessing until the dramatic conclusion. By giving her characters a wide range of expressions it touches upon the reader and leaves an impression that is hard to forget. (Thank you, Linda).

Amira Press has designated MINING EVERMORE as their Around the World winner.
